Due to the possible serious consequences of failure, some aspects of lifting operations have been controlled by legislation in the form of the Lifting operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). These Regulations state what should be done when planning or carrying out any activity involving lifting using equipment. Legislation places a duty on all employers to ensure that the health, safety and welfare of their employees is paramount.
LOLER requires that the equipment for lifting is checked by competent person on a six monthly basis. They recommend that this competent person is independent of the company, and therefore unbiased.
